Having a safe home is something many of us take for granted. For some families in Bali, however, even basic housing remains out of reach.

The Sahaja Sawah Foundation helps vulnerable families by renovating existing homes, building new houses, and constructing toilets where needed. Since launching the program, the foundation has helped build or renovate more than 40 houses and over 20 toilets.

The impact goes far beyond bricks and concrete. A secure home provides safety, dignity, and stability for entire families.

Access to safe drinking water remains a challenge in parts of Bali.

To address this issue, the foundation collaborates with partners and donors to distribute water filtration systems to families in need. More than 1,000 water filters have already been provided across Bali, helping households gain access to cleaner drinking water without relying on expensive bottled supplies.

The program not only improves health outcomes but also reduces plastic waste and household expenses. Recent donation campaigns have continued to expand the reach of this initiative.

Environmental conservation plays an important role in the foundation’s mission.

Along Bali’s coastline, sea turtle nesting sites face increasing pressure from beach traffic and human activity. The foundation works with local conservation partners to protect turtle eggs, operate hatcheries, and educate local communities about the importance of preserving these endangered animals.

One particularly innovative aspect of the program is that local residents receive compensation for turning in turtle eggs so they can be safely protected and hatched. This creates both environmental awareness and an additional source of income.

The foundation also supports local animal rescue efforts, helping provide food, shelter, and care for rescued dogs, cats, monkeys, and other animals.

One of the foundation’s most creative initiatives is its recycling and waste collection program.

Each month, staff members collect recyclable waste directly from local households. Residents separate materials such as plastic, paper, metal, cans, and glass, which are then weighed and assigned a value. Instead of receiving immediate cash, the earnings are saved in personal savings accounts managed through the program.

This initiative achieves multiple goals:

• Teaching environmental responsibility
• Encouraging recycling habits
• Providing financial benefits to participating families

It is a simple but powerful example of how environmental and social goals can work hand in hand.
