Southwest Lombok: rugged nature and hidden coastlines

Southwest Lombok: rugged nature and hidden coastlines

Southwest Lombok is where rugged nature and untouched coastlines meet. The beaches here are wide, with soft sand and clear turquoise water, and feel surprisingly quiet compared to the island’s better-known spots. Small villages are scattered along the coast, and in the early morning, all you often hear is the gentle sound of fishermen heading out to sea.

A coastline with little traffic

Unlike the busier west and east coasts, traffic here is minimal and a relaxed, peaceful atmosphere prevails. You can walk for miles along the beach without running into many other travelers, or explore hidden bays and quiet stretches of sand by scooter. This part of Lombok isn’t just about beaches: the hills, palm trees and striking cliffs give the coastline a dramatic, distinctive landscape, especially at sunset.

Bangko-Bangko: rugged and legendary

At the very southwestern tip of the island lies Bangko-Bangko, a remote nature area known worldwide for Desert Point, one of the most celebrated surf breaks on the planet. The wave itself is best suited to experienced surfers, but even for those not here to surf, this is an impressive stretch of untouched coastline, with dry coastal forest, rocky headlands and views across the strait toward Bali. The remote setting gives it an authentic, raw atmosphere that’s hard to find elsewhere on Lombok.

Hidden bays full of Gili islands

Around Sekotong, in the island’s southwest, lies a cluster of small Gili islands such as Gili Nanggu, Gili Sudak and Gili Gede, each with its own quiet stretch of beach and clear water. They’re perfect for a day of island hopping, far from the better-known Gilis up north, and their small scale and calm still make them feel like a true hidden gem.

Snorkeling among colorful coral reefs

The sheltered bays in this part of Lombok create calm waters, making the area excellent for snorkeling. Colorful fish swim around the coral reefs, and visibility is impressively good in many spots. For those who prefer something more active in the water, there are also stretches of coast with waves perfect for a relaxed surf session.

Calm and comfort in eco-resortsCalm and comfort in eco-resorts

Southwest Lombok is home to a number of small, sustainably designed eco-resorts and beachfront stays that fit perfectly with the area’s peaceful atmosphere. They’re often set slightly off the beaten path, with sea views and the surrounding nature as their biggest draw, ideal for anyone looking to truly unwind for a few days.
