Uluwatu, Bali: The Most Beautiful Beaches, Cliffs and Sunsets on the Island

Uluwatu: Where Bali Is at Its Most Beautiful

When people talk about Uluwatu, they usually refer to the entire peninsula at the southern tip of Bali. And for good reason, as this is undoubtedly one of the island’s most stunning regions.

Uluwatu is famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs, turquoise ocean, white sand beaches and laid back atmosphere. You will not find crowded rice terraces or busy city centers here, but instead hidden coves, world renowned surf breaks, stylish beach clubs and some of Bali’s most spectacular sunsets.

Whether you want to relax on the beach, enjoy a cocktail on a cliffside terrace or discover breathtaking viewpoints, Uluwatu deserves a place on every Bali itinerary.

1. Visit the Iconic Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple is one of Bali’s most impressive temples. Perched on a cliff approximately 70 meters above the ocean, it offers some of the most spectacular views on the island.

The atmosphere becomes especially magical at sunset, when the famous Kecak Dance takes place. During this traditional Balinese performance, dozens of performers create a hypnotic chant while the sun slowly disappears into the sea.

For the best experience, visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds.

2. Discover Some of Bali’s Most Beautiful Beaches

If there is one reason travelers fall in love with Uluwatu, it is the beaches.

Nyang Nyang Beach

Nyang Nyang Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Bali. The wide stretch of white sand, turquoise water and towering cliffs create a true tropical paradise.

Despite its beauty, the beach remains relatively quiet because reaching it requires a short walk down the cliff.

Suluban Beach

Suluban Beach feels like a hidden world. Narrow passages through the rocks lead to small beaches, caves and spectacular viewpoints.

It is also one of Bali’s most famous surf spots.

Green Bowl Beach

If you love hidden gems, Green Bowl Beach is a must visit. Crystal clear water, soft sand and a peaceful atmosphere make it one of Uluwatu’s best kept secrets.

Balangan Beach

Balangan Beach combines a beautiful beach with one of the most stunning viewpoints in South Bali. From the cliff, you can enjoy panoramic views of the coastline and crashing waves below.

Padang Padang Beach

This small beach became world famous after appearing in the movie Eat Pray Love. It is charming, picturesque and ideal for swimming when conditions allow.

3. Watch the Sunset from Karang Boma Cliff

For one of Bali’s most breathtaking views, head to Karang Boma Cliff.

From this rugged cliff, you can look out across the endless Indian Ocean and Uluwatu’s dramatic coastline. Unlike many other viewpoints, it is often surprisingly quiet.

Just be careful near the edge, as there are no safety barriers.

4. Enjoy a Beach Club with Ocean Views

Uluwatu is famous for its spectacular beach clubs, many of which are built directly on the cliffs overlooking the ocean.

One Eighty Dayclub

This iconic day club sits 162 meters above the ocean and features a glass bottom infinity pool that extends over the edge of the cliff. The view alone makes it worth a visit.

Palmilla Beach Club

Located on beautiful Melasti Beach, Palmilla offers a relaxed atmosphere, stylish daybeds and one of the most scenic beachfront settings in South Bali.

Ulu Cliffhouse

A unique combination of beach club, restaurant and event venue with incredible sunset views overlooking the ocean.

5. Go Beach Hopping Along the Coast

One of the best ways to experience Uluwatu is by exploring its many beaches.

Each bay has its own character. Some are perfect for swimming, while others attract surfers from around the world. Along the way, you will discover cozy cafés, scenic viewpoints and hidden corners that make Uluwatu so special.

Take your time and leave room for spontaneous stops. Those unexpected moments often become the highlights of your trip.
